London’s favourite designer Mary Katrantzou has teamed with the go-to denim label of all Hollywood celebrities Current/Elliott to create a capsule collection. Katrantzou has decided to challenge herself into tranferring her dazzling prints to a fabric that doesn’t belong to her: denim, with the precious help of Current/Elliott creative director Serge Azria. She declared that it was a chance for her to learn to work with shapes and cuts she wasn’t aware of. The two selected the theme print of Katrantzou’s spring 2013 collection, postage-stamps and banknotes and applied it to a few of Current/Elliott signature cuts: the jacket, the shorts, the shirt and the skinny pant.
Mary Katrantzou is London’s darling, queen of collaborations (Topshop, Longchamp). She is a young greek designer, graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2008 and founded her eponymous label the same year. Her signature style revolves around digital prints inspired by the art of trompe l’oeil, applied on structured dresses and blouses, that have quickly become a must-have for all those in the know. She has rapidly gained fans among the fashion elite and her pieces are now one of the most coveted, which is why the collaboration with Current/Elliott will be a hit!
The collection has something for everyone, it’s great for those who love to mix and match. Personally, I have never been a Katrantzou fan, probably because I saw too many of hers, Peter Pilotto, Preen and Erdem clothes when I was living in London- these guys were everywhere, the print trend is really big in London- but I am really fascinated by this collection. I think it provides a good change on the way denim is generally perceived, it has amazing quality and the added value of making Katranzou’s designs available to a wider audience, without prejudicing the sartorial value of the items. I really like the colours, they feel just so right for spring, but at the same time the collection conveys the sense that these are items are gonna last way more than one season! Maybe it’s worth the investment, don’t you think? I am debating over the shift dress or the skinny jeans… Mmm decisions, decisions!
